Piet Visscher

Piet Visscher

Piet VisscherPiet Visscher (1925) lived in May 1940, when the Netherlands were invaded by Germany, in the Dutch city of Rotterdam. After the fierce bombardment of this city the family decided to move to the ‘safe’ city of Winschoten. In 1941 Piet started as a delivery boy at the Dutch Railway Company. He worked at different railway stations. In February 1944 he returned to Winschoten, this time as an apprentice. During his work he witnessed several ‘Jew-transports’. Especially one of them remained in his mind. One colleague asked him to master the signals. He saw the faces of the Jews that were in the train from his position at the platform. He also witnessed the citizens of Winschoten, picking up notes that were thrown off the train.
